Hugo is not fashionable. It has no dashboard, no plugin marketplace and no venture funding. It also builds this entire site in under a second, which is the only feature I actually care about.
Quick Verdict
The right generator when content is files, performance is a requirement, and nobody needs a browser-based editor. The wrong tool for teams that expect a CMS.
Who It Is For
Developers, technical writers, designers who are comfortable with a terminal, and anyone maintaining a publication that should still work in five years.
How I Use It
Content lives in Markdown. Templates live in the repository. hugo server gives instant preview while writing, and the build output is plain HTML that any host can serve. Search runs on Pagefind, and assets are processed by Hugo’s own image pipeline.
hugo new systems/my-new-system.md
hugo server -D
hugo --minify
Core Workflow
Write in Markdown, preview locally, commit, push, deploy. The generator is only involved in the middle two steps, which is exactly how much I want to think about it.
What Works Well
- Build speed. Hundreds of pages in well under a second. Iterating on templates stays pleasant.
- Zero maintenance. A single binary, no dependency tree, no security patch cycle.
- Built-in asset pipeline. Sass compilation, minification, fingerprinting and image resizing without a separate build tool.
- Content modelling. Sections, taxonomies and front matter cover most editorial structures without plugins.
What works well
- Extremely fast builds
- Single binary, no dependencies
- Excellent asset and image pipeline
- Strong taxonomy and content modelling
What does not
- Go template syntax has a learning curve
- No browser-based editing
- Documentation assumes some developer fluency
- Theme ecosystem is inconsistent in quality
Pricing / Value
Free and open source. The real cost is the template learning curve, roughly a weekend if you have used any templating language before.
Final Verdict
If your content can be files, Hugo is still the most reliable way to turn them into fast HTML. The reason it is not fashionable is the same reason it is stable: there is nothing to sell.
